Data brief on the housing situation in Berlin

In order to gain a better understanding of the housing situation in global cities, we have launched a survey in early 2021 in six metropolises (Berlin, Chicago, London, Los Angeles, New York, and Paris). This week’s data briefing introduces the housing situation in Berlin.

The survey data shows that respondents in Berlin are satisfied with their current housing situation, but almost half of the respondents indicated that they intend to move within the next five years.
We also find that 41% of the respondents are concerned that they have to move involuntarily. The concerns are mainly related to financial issues. More than half (51%) of those concerned indicated rising rents as a reason for their concern, and 31% stated financial bottlenecks.
The data also shows variations in the length of stay of the respondents in a district. For example, people living in Berlin Mitte stayed there for a shorter period (17.3 years) compared to people living in Berlin Reinickendorf (22.8 years).
All data briefs can be accessed through our website (spur.ethz.ch/research/housing-situation). The Data is free to use and can be downloaded from the website of the ETH research collection (external page https://doi.org/10.3929/ethz-b-000513683).
