Data brief on the housing situation in Los Angeles

In order to gain a better understanding of the housing situation in global cities, we have launched a survey in early 2021 in six metropolises (Berlin, Chicago, London, Los Angeles, New York, and Paris). In the fourth week of this series, we focus on the housing situation in Los Angeles.

Our survey data shows that 59.2% of the respondents are concerned about involuntarily housing relocation. More than two-thirds of the respondents who stated they were very concerned indicated that the COVID-19 situation has further increased their concern.
Homeowners belong predominantly to the three highest income quintiles, and low-income groups have a higher probability of being non-homeowners. This difference also shows in the respondents level of satisfaction with their current housing expenditures. While 66.1% of the homeowners indicated they were satisfied with their housing costs, only 32.6% of those renting their accommodation indicated they were satisfied with their housing costs.
All data briefs can be accessed through our website (spur.ethz.ch/research/housing-situation). The Data is free to use and can be downloaded from the website of the ETH Research Collection (external page https://doi.org/10.3929/ethz-b-000513683).
