Data brief on the housing situation in Paris

In order to gain a better understanding of the housing situation in global cities, we have launched a survey in early 2021 in six metropolises (Berlin, Chicago, London, Los Angeles, New York, and Paris). In the fifth week of this series, we focus on the housing situation in Paris.

Our survey data shows that respondents are satisfied with their current housing situation. Nevertheless, more than half of the sample indicated that they want to change their current accommodation within the next five years voluntarily.
38.9% of the respondents are concerned about being forced to leave their current homes involuntarily within the next five years. For some respondents, the concerns were amplified due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Here, we see a difference between the tenure types, where particularly respondents renting their accommodation through the private rental market seem to be affected to a higher degree. 42.3% of them indicated that the COVID-19 pandemic had increased their concerns. In comparison, 34.1% of the homeowners and 32.1% of the respondents living in social renting households or cooperatives indicated the same.
All data briefs can be accessed through our website (spur.ethz.ch/research/housing-situation). The Data is free to use and can be downloaded from the website of the ETH Research Collection (external page https://doi.org/10.3929/ethz-b-000513683).
