Alina Bärnthaler joins the SPUR-team as PhD Candidate
In June 2025, Alina Bärnthaler joined the Spatial Development and Urban Policy (SPUR) Research Group of Prof. Dr. David Kaufmann at ETH Zurich.
As part of the SNSF-funded research project “Beyond Replacement Construction: Implementing the Socio-Ecological Transformation of the Swiss Built Environment”, Alina´s research will focus on factors that enable or hinder the socio-ecological transformation of the built environment in Switzerland. In this context, Alina will identify locations at risk of unsustainable transformation processes and explore pathways for implementing soft densification measures, such as extensions, subdivisions, conversions, reuses or renovations of existing buildings.
Alina has an academic background in in Spatial Planning, (B.Sc., M.Sc., Vienna University of Technology) and in Business, Economics and Social Sciences (B.Sc., Vienna University of Economics and Business). Next to her studies, she worked as a Research Assistant at Vienna University of Technology and Vienna University of Economics and Business as well as an urban and regional planner at a Viennese office for architecture and urbanism.
