Education

Prof. David Kaufmann and members of the SPUR group teach three courses in the master program Spatial Development and Infrastructure Systems. We also supervise master theses, project work, and bachelor theses. In addition, Prof. David Kaufmann teaches in the continuing education programs MAS in Spatial Planning and the CAS Technology and Public Policy at ETH Zürich.

Courses

The course deals with foundations of spatial planning. On the basis of current and future challenges of spatial development in Switzerland and Europe, we discuss central planning tasks and intervention possibilities. The course is committed to the goal of sustainable spatial development and to the sustainable use of land as a limited resource.

This mandatory course (3 ECTS) is given in autumn semesters and is taught together with Anouk Kuitenbrouwer.

We live in an urban and urbanizing world. This course is about key policy and planning issues that cities face, and how various cities address them to plan for a sustainable and just common future. We cover the following urban planning and urban policy issues: Densification, affordable housing, transportation, climate change, smart cities, economic development, and migration. We approach each urban issues by a mix of in-class discussions, inputs from the lecturers, oral presentations as well as written reflections by students.

This course (4 ECTS) is given in spring semesters.

The course is an introduction to urban design through design workshops, drawing tutorials and input lectures. The studio focuses on design principles and methodologies for achieving sustainable densification under challenging urban conditions. The studio format aims to engage students in design-led experimentation and follows an iterative process to develop spatial planning knowledge and graphic skills. Through synthesis of collective learnings, students develop a project-based exchange and the application of interdisciplinary ideas and techniques.

This course (6 ECTS) is given in spring semesters, and is taught by Anouk Kuitenbrouwer and Claudia Sinatra.

Theses

The SPUR group supervises master theses as well as semester papers. The current topics can be found in the link below. We also welcome topic suggestions from students that are within our research areas of spatial planning, participation, urban policy, densification policies and housing policy.

Theses of students at SPUR, which include research with human subjects, might have to be approved by the ETH Zurich Ethics Commission prior to data collection. Please contact your SPUR thesis supervisor early to enquire about the process.
